Gene began his career after college working for IBM Corporation as an Account Administrator and Purchasing Agent. It was a great opportunity to learn about business in the real world from an excellent company. Three years later he decided to resign from IBM in order to attend law school at William Mitchell College of Law, while working part time as a law clerk at a local law firm.
After graduating from William Mitchell, one year ahead of schedule, Gene practiced law with a small law firm in the Twin Cities. There he honed his skills practicing in the areas of commercial litigation and business transactions. He also had the opportunity to appear before the Minnesota Court of Appeals in a case relating to the rights of a minority shareholder and the applicability of a special litigation committee. In that case the Court of Appeals affirmed the trial court’s decision in favor of Gene’s client.
In 1999, Gene and Mike Minenko started Minenko & Hoff, P.A. where Gene continued representing small businesses, and Mike represented clients in employment matters. Gene also began to develop a practice representing Minnesota sales representatives. In 2014, Gene began advocating for legislative changes to the Minnesota Termination of Sales Representative Act (the “Act”). In 2014, 2017, and 2022 he organized a group of Minnesota sales representatives, who together with the help of a national trade association and government relations firm, went to the Minnesota Legislature to close several loopholes under the Act. Their collaborative efforts resulted in the Legislature passing, and the Governor signing into law, three significant amendments that closed the loopholes. These amendments culminated in greater protection to Minnesota sales representatives, as defined under the Act.
As the career paths of Gene and Mike began to go in different directions, they amicably parted ways and Gene started Hoff Law, LLC. Gene has served on a number of boards and one foundation, in the Twin Cities. He also served as a Mediator for a pilot mediation program.
